Whenever I power walk or walk fast, my ankles start to really hurt and I mean, it hurts so bad that I start to limp. The pain eventually goes up my leg. Can anyone tell me what the cause is, why and what I can do please?

Left on one of our ads last month. We get some version of this every week, so here is the answer.

WHAT THE ARCH IS FOR

Your arch works as a springboard and a shock absorber. It stores and releases energy every time you take a step.

That matters because the force of walking has to go somewhere. A working arch absorbs it, but a flat one passes it upward.

WHY THE ARCH DROPS

Arches flatten under load over time. The more they take, the less they spring back.

The Cleveland Clinic lists flat feet acquired in adulthood as more common with age, and notes it more often affects women.

It is also more common in people who spend long periods on their feet.

Once the arch sits lower, it does less of the absorbing, and everything above it needs to pick up the slack.

WHERE THE PAIN SHOWS UP

When the arch flattens, the ankle rolls inward, the knee pulls out of line to follow it, the hip tilts, and the lower back overcompensates.

Cleveland Clinic lists knees, hips and lower back as sites of referred pain from flat feet.

WHY MOST INSOLES DO NOT HELP

Take any cushioned insole and press it with your thumb. If it gives under your thumb, it gives under you.

Under load the foam compresses and the arch keeps continues to drop.

Custom orthotics are rigid, which is correct. They also cost a few hundred pounds,
need an appointment, and you get one pair for one pair of shoes.

Obviously I’d want to see them in real life but if they are as they look on screen and offer the support as claimed, then yes, they will help and they are a really good price. (Podiatrist)

They are very well designed orthotics devices. Even better to some NHS devices I have tried out. Keep up the good work.

WHAT AN ARCH SUPPORT CAN AND CANNOT DO

An arch support does not correct the shape of your foot. The Hospital for Special Surgery states it directly:

A boot, brace, or orthotic has not been shown to correct or even prevent the progression of the foot deformity.

Hospital for Special Surgery

What they say it can do is “alleviate symptoms and may slow the progression”.

So the goal is not a cure. It is holding the arch closer to where it should sit, so less load reaches the joints above.

WHAT STEADY STEP INSOLES DO

They feature a reinforced arch structure that holds its shape under full body weight, all day, without flattening the way cushioning does.

They fit any shoe with a removable insole and can be trimmed for a perfect fit.

THE FIRST TWO WEEKS

Day one feels firm, and for some people the first week is uncomfortable.

That is the arch being held where it has not been held in years, and it is the most common reason for discomfort.

“Much more comfortable on my feet all day.”

“I’m on my feet for most of the day at work and by the evening my feet used to feel absolutely done. I’ve been using these insoles for a few weeks now and the difference in support is noticeable. They feel firm under the arch without being uncomfortable, and my shoes actually feel better to walk in. I’ve already ordered another pair so I don’t have to keep moving them between my work shoes and trainers.”

“I didn’t realise how much proper support mattered.”

“I bought these because I wanted a bit more support when walking and honestly wasn’t expecting a huge difference. They took a little getting used to at first, but after a few days they felt really comfortable. I especially notice the difference on longer walks and when I’m standing for hours. Easy to trim to fit my trainers too. Really pleased with them.”

“Firm support without making my shoes uncomfortable.”

“I’ve tried soft gel insoles before but they always seemed to flatten after a while. These are completely different. The arch feels much more supportive and the heel sits nicely in place when I walk. I trimmed them using my old insoles as a guide and they fitted perfectly. Been wearing them daily for several weeks now and they’re still holding their shape. Very impressed for the price.”
